Journalism That Matters

ASBPE’s second book tells how B2B publications can make a difference in the industries they serve.

Book launch, another conference highlight, includes Legal Business editor.

ASBPE’s new book exploring how editors of business-to-business publications drive industry change will launch with a splash July 21 at the Society’s two-day National Editorial Conference in Chicago, July 20–21.

Conceived as a showcase for the hard-hitting, results-oriented journalism of many business-to-business publications, Journalism that Matters: How B2B Editors Change the Industries They Cover, digs deep into the genesis of some exceptionally engrossing stories.

Two examples include how Government Computer News exposed extreme résumé padding in the federal government, and how Daily Report for Executives pushed OSHA into reforming chemical handling disclosures.

Chicago Tribune Business Writer to Speak at Conference

Additionally, Mark Skertic, business reporter for the Chicago Tribune and member of Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), will deliver the session on Covering Public Companies: Digging Up the Numbers and Information That Matter. In this session, we will examine:

  • Suggestions for useful, informative articles on public companies,
  • Where to find information, including a discussion of SEC filings and the hidden information in the filings that business writers can access to generate a solid, useful story.

This session also will include an attendee exercise and discussion of facts involving a case study.

The book, published by Marion Street Press, Oak Park, Ill., a specialist in journalism titles, features 17 stories. All the pieces are written by ASBPE members or have had their work recognized by ASBPE or Trade, Association, and Business Publications International awards.

The Impact of Legal Business

For the launch, ASBPE immediate past president Rob Freedman will discuss the book’s origin, compilation, and goals, and introduce Tom Freeman, editor of U.K.-based Legal Business, who will recount the impact of his publication on one of the U.K.’s most important courts.

“This book is long overdue and yet only scratches the surface on the impact of B2B editors,” says Freedman. “For each story we’ve compiled, there are dozens of others that go unmentioned. But at least now we have a picture of how important B2B journalism is and a map for other editors to follow for producing high-impact work.”

Freedman is co-editor of the book, along with Steven Roll, ASBPE D.C. chapter president and senior tax law editor for State Tax Report, published by BNA, Inc.

The book can be ordered online or via mail from ASBPE.
