In a major expansion
of its annual award competition, the Azbee Awards
of Excellence program has added 16 categories,
including one for multi-platform
journalism and another for headline writing (see complete
list at right). Five categories are being
added for print newsletters and two for e-newsletters.
The e-newsletter additions
are part
of a six-category expansion in the digital media field.
The two e-newsletter categories are
-
Breaking News and
- Tips/How-To/Service
Journalism.
For print newsletters, we’re adding five categories:
- Feature Article,
- How-To Article,
- Original Research,
- Design,
and
- Information Graphics.
Print magazine categories are also getting
a major boost. In addition to our first
awards for headline-writing,
the Azbee Awards will honor work publishing
Annual Buyer’s
Guides, in producing a Product Section or Department, and
Overall Photography/Illustration.
Heightening the digital honors
To raise the prestige of our former
Overall Web Site category, we will
now call it
the B2B Web
Site of
the Year, giving
it a status equal to our Magazines
of the Year.
Our new digital awards focus on
many of the popular platforms of
the day.
In addition
to the new
e-newsletter categories,
we now offer categories for digital
magazines (Digital Magazine — General
Excellence) and blogs (Overall B2B Blog).
Plus, we’re adding another important Web category:
the Member/Subscribers-Only Web Section.
Last year’s print newsletter and e-newsletter categories
are also being renamed to provide them with the prestige
they deserve:
•
Print Newsletter — General
•
Excellence and E-Newsletter — General Excellence.

The Society’s creation of a Multi-Platform — General
Excellence category may
be the first such business-to-business editorial
and design award offered.
For this category, ASBPE
will honor excellence
of a print
magazine and/or newsletter
article or series
of articles
in coordination with
any one or
more of the following:
Web sites, e-newsletters,
blogs,
Webinars, or
podcasts.
Judges will look to traditional
print and digital criteria
to determine winners.
This most significant
national-only award
recognizes the efforts
editors make going
cross-platform
using both print
and digital media to
provide useful information
to their
readers.
Recognizing platform
growth
“In offering all these
new categories — for digital and
print enterprises — ASBPE
is looking at the
aggressive growth
of magazines’ online
presence. The business
creates new kinds
of journalism every
year, and we want
to recognize the
best of it,” said
ASBPE national
president Roy Harris,
senior editor, CFO.
“Still, as an old print guy I’m especially excited that
we’ll be giving magazines a chance to submit their
best headlines for recognition. There’s so much head-writing
originality in our newsrooms. It’s about time headline
writers got a pat on the back — and a handsome plaque.”
Judging
Each entry is
read by multiple,
experienced
judges with
background
in business publications.
Their
introduction
to each entry
is a
required
one-page
cover letter
describing
the publication’s
mission, readership, the enterprising work that went into
the entry, and its significance to readers.
The
Magazine of the
Year judging panel analyzes
three consecutive
issues
of a publication
for quality
of writing, reporting
and editing;
editorial
organization;
layout
and design;
value
to
readers;
and
interaction
with
readers.
Print
Editorial
judging typically
is
based on quality
of
writing, reporting
and
editing; development
of
the subject;
presentation;
and
value to readers.
Print
Design
judging typically
is
based
on
layout
and
composition;
use
of
typography,
graphics
and
photography;
content;
originality;
relevance
to
the
related
story
or
publication;
and
how
easily
the
entry
communicates
useful
information
to
the
reader.
Digital
judging is
generally based
on reporting,
writing, design,
usability, readability,
organization, value
to readers,
interactivity, information
architecture, and
effective use
of technology.
Judging
in all
categories takes
into account
the editorial
and presentation
principles of
service journalism:
easily accessible,
useful information.
Awards
Two
sets of
awards will
be given
in each
Print Magazine
Editorial and
Design category,
and in
the Magazine
of the
Year competition.
One is
for publications
with circulation
of 80,000
or more,
and one
for less
than 80,000.
Gold, silver,
and bronze
awards are
typically given
for National
winners.
For
regional winners,
gold and
silver awards
generally will
be given,
but not
necessarily in
every category.
Only
national awards
will be
given for
the Digital
and print
newsletter categories.
Judges
reserve the
right to
limit the
number of
awards.
